The History of The Bastrop Huston-Tillotson Alumni Association
In the 1950s, the Original Bastrop Chapter was established by O.D. Deshay and Gene Sampson, Sr. This organization garnered recognition for its attendance and recruitment efforts. Over time, they became affiliated with the Huston-Tillotson International Alumni Association (HTIAA). As a chapter, they organized fundraisers and raised funds for scholarships benefiting students in the Bastrop County area. Additionally, they made generous contributions to Huston-Tillotson College, which has since evolved into a university. Their commitment extended to attending the National Conference in Austin via motorcade, where they consistently boasted the highest membership among all chapters.
In November 2022, the Original Bastrop Chapter made a significant decision: to transform into The Bastrop Huston-Tillotson. Now operating as the Bastrop Alumni Association, this 501©(3) tax-exempt corporation continues its mission by recruiting members, supporting the university, and providing scholarships for students in the Bastrop Independent School District.

Chartered in 1877 as Tillotson Collegiate and Normal Institute, the school began classes on January 17, 1881. Many of Tillotson’s first students had no prior formal education. However, the eager students, who numbered 100 by the end of the first year, understood that their admission to Tillotson made them among the elect of their race and placed upon them the responsibility to enrich others through the skills they would derive from their education. n June 2, 1909, a new charter was issued and the school was renamed Tillotson College, a “normal school” for the training of teachers for the black community.
